15 The Nordic Swan Ecolabel was introduced in 1989 by the Nordic Council of Ministers as a voluntary eco- label system for the Nordic countries of Denmark, Fin- land, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It is now used in more than 50 product sectors. For printers and print- ed products, the ecolabel is focused on reducing the overall environment and climate pollution, and on promoting a good work environment. The criteria consist of a combination of compulsory requirements and a points system, whereby a minimum score must be achieved for certification, along with an audit. There are strict provisions on health and environmen- tal risks with regard to print materials, although there are exceptions, for example, for UV printing inks. Ap- plications for certification are submitted via an online portal and are then processed by an allocated adviser. Cradle to Cradle (C2C) ist ein seit den 1990er-Jahren eta­ blierter Ansatz für eine konsequente Kreislaufwirtschaft, in der Materialien in biologische oder technische Kreisläufe zurückgeführt und dort gehalten werden können. Eine voll­ ständige Zertifizierung nach dem Cradle to Cradle Certified® Produktstandard sieht die Bewertung in fünf Kategorien vor: Materialgesundheit, Kreislauffähigkeit, Nutzung erneuer­ barer Energien, verantwortungsvolles Wassermanagement und Einhaltung sozialer Standards. Innerhalb dieser Kate­ gorien lassen sich fünf Stufen, von Basic, über Bronze, Silber, Gold, bis hin zu Platin erreichen. Für die Bewertung und Er­ stellung der benötigten Dokumente muss ein Vertrag mit einer akkreditierten Prüfstelle geschlossen werden. Das Zer­ tifikat wird nach abschließender Prüfung gegen eine Gebühr vom Cradle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute ausge­ stellt und muss alle zwei Jahre einen Re-Zertifizierungspro­ zess durchlaufen. Das Nordic Swan Ecolabel wurde 1989 vom Nordischen Ministerrat als freiwilliges Umweltzeichensystem für die nordischen Länder Dänemark, Finnland, Island, Norwegen und Schweden eingeführt und ist mittlerweile in über 50 Produktbereichen vertreten. Hinsichtlich Druckmaterialien gelten strenge Vorgaben zu Umwelt- und Gesundheitsgefahren, es existieren aber auch Ausnahmen, wie z. B. für UV-Druckfarben. Subtext 1234 5678 N O R D I C S W A N E C O L A B E L The Blaue Engel (Blue Angel) is one of the oldest eco- labels in the world and has identified particularly envi- ronmentally friendly products and services in Germany since 1978. In addition to the standards for DE-UZ 14, 56 and 72 for recycled substrates, the standard DE-UZ 195 for printed products is of particular note and is regarded as one of the strictest ecolabels in this sector. Certification consists of compliance with environmental standards for the used materials, in the production process and when returning the printed products to the recycling loop, as well as meeting requirements to minimise energy con- sumption, waste quantities and the emission of organ- ic solvents. Companies must also demonstrate that the materials used, particularly printing inks and varnishes, comply with specific limit values with evidence provided by external laboratories. The criteria are revised at least every four years by the German Federal Environment Agency and the inspection and awarding of the certifi- cations is performed by the independent RAL gGmbH. Neben den Standards für Recyclingsubstrate DE-UZ 14, 56 und 72 ist das DE-UZ 195 für Druckerzeugnisse besonders hervorzuheben, das als eines der striktesten Umweltzei­ chen in diesem Bereich gilt. Die Zertifizierung umfasst sowohl die Einhaltung von Umweltstandards bei den eingesetzten Materialien, im Herstellungsprozess und bei der Rückführung von Druckprodukten in den Recycling­ kreislauf als auch Anforderungen zur Minimierung des Energieverbrauchs, der Abfallmengen und der Emission von organischen Lösemitteln. Zudem sind bei den einge­ setzten Materialien, insbesondere Druckfarben und -lacke, die Einhaltung bestimmter Grenzwerte durch Nachweise von externen Laboratorien zu belegen. Die Kriterienwerden spätestens alle vier Jahre vom Umweltbundesamt überar­ beitet, die Prüfung und Vergabe der Zertifizierungen erfolgt durch die unabhängige RAL gGmbH. Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is an approach established since the 1990s aimed at a consistent circular economy in which materials are fed back into and remain in biological or technical loops. Full certi- fication according to the Cradle-to-Cradle Certi- fied® product standard involves being assessed in five categories: Material health, product circu- larity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship and social fairness. Within these categories it is possible to achieve five levels from basic to bronze, silver, gold and platinum. A con- tract must be concluded with an accredited as- sessor for the evaluation and preparation of the necessary documents. Following inspection and paid fee, the certificate will be issued by the Cra- dle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute with a re-certification process followed every two years.
