14 Overview of the array of ecolabels The EU Ecolabel is a voluntary environmental quality seal that provides a standard identification of environ- mentally friendly products and services in the European market. The major advantage of the EU Ecolabel, which was initiated by the European Commission in 1992, is its international reputation: It is recognised in all 27 EU member states as well as in Norway, Iceland and Liech- tenstein. Today, about 70,000 products and services bear this ecolabel, from baby clothing to electronic devices. The award criteria for printed paper, stationery paper and paper carrier bag products are defined in Commission Decision (EU) 2020/1803. Representatives of the individ- ual member states and other members from industry, retail, and environmental and consumer associations are involved in developing and reviewing the requirements. In Germany, the application and issuing of the label us- age agreements is through RAL gGmbH. Umweltzeichen sind in der Druckindustrie ein beliebtes Marketinginstrument. Sie geben Orientierung und können die Chancen bei öffentlichen Ausschreibungen oder Kaufentscheidungen positiv beeinflussen. Bis auf wenige Ausnahmenwird das finale Druckprodukt zertifiziert, daher sind neben der geeignetenDruckfarbe eine Vielzahl weiterer Vorgaben einzuhalten. Sich im Vorfeld mit den jeweiligen Vergabekriterien genau auseinanderzusetzen ist essentiell, zumal die Zertifizierung gebührenpflich- tig ist und teilweise unterschiedliche Versionen nebeneinander existieren. Hier eine Übersicht der gängigen Umweltzeichen für Druckprodukte. Das EU Ecolabel ist ein freiwilliges Umweltgütesiegel, das im europäischen Markt umweltfreundliche Produkte und Dienstleistungen einheitlich kennzeichnet. An der Entwicklung und Überarbeitung der Anforderungen sind Vertreter der einzelnen Mitgliedsstaaten und weitere Mitglieder aus Industrie, Umwelt- und Verbraucherver- bänden und dem Handel beteiligt. In Deutschland läuft die Antragstellung und die Ausstellung der Zeichen- nutzungsverträge über die RAL gGmbH. The Austrian Ecolabel has been a state-awarded qual- ity seal for the domestic green economy for more than 30 years. It identifies environmentally friendly products and services in the categories of products, tourism, events and education. At the same time, the public is informed about the environmentally pol- luting manufacture, use and disposal of consumer goods. For the printing industry, the relevant ecolabel is UZ 24 for printed and recycled products. In addition to general requirements for the company, the crite- ria focus on conserving resources in production and finishing. While the association for consumer infor- mation is responsible for drawing up the criteria, the certification is issued in close collaboration with ac- credited inspection bodies. The logo was designed by the famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwas- ser and symbolises the four ecology elements: earth, water, air and nature. Das Österreichische Umweltzeichen ist seit über 30 Jah­ ren ein staatlich vergebenes Gütesiegel für die heimische ökologische Wirtschaft. Es kennzeichnet umweltfreundliche Erzeugnisse und Dienstleistungen in den Sparten Produkte, Tourismus, Events und Bildung. Relevant für die Druckindustrie ist das Umweltzeichen UZ 24 für Druck- und Recyclingprodukte. Neben allgemeinen Anforderungen an den Betrieb liegt der Fokus der Kriterien auf Ressourcenschonung in Produktion und Veredelung. Während sich der Verein für Konsumenteninformation für die Erarbeitung der Kriterien verantwortlich zeigt, erfolgt die eigentliche Zertifizierung in enger Zusammenarbeit mit an­ erkannten Prüfstellen. They offer guidance and can positively impact purchas- ing decisions or a company’s chances in public tenders. With very few exceptions, the final printed product is the subject of certification, which requires not only a suitable printing ink but also compliance with a wide range of other specifica- tions. Investigating the relevant award criteria in advance is essential, particularly as certification is subject to a charge and in some cases, different versions exist in parallel.
